So I've been working on a little race map. Have been testing it as a CBT map and it's been just fine. I've got plenty of spawn points and a regen. From what I can tell from the documentation, to make it into a race map, all I have to do is create one vehicle on the starting line with the label blank, class as CHECK1, team neutral, type car, and set for AI control. And then another one just like it as CHECK2 somewhere down the road.
So I did that, saved and exported, renamed the MSN file to RAC, and toss it and the TER file in my miss16 and miss8 folders. But when I load the map, it crashes I76. If I go back and delete the checkpoints and save it as a CBT, it runs fine. And yes, I can host other race maps fine.
Any ideas?
Creating a race map, runs fine as a combat map, crashes when I add checkpoints

Save it as a .RAC without the checkpoints and see where you get?
It should run fine, just with no lap counter.
As noted last night: Lap counters are fickle.

In the meantime I'll see if I can't find the tutorial I made for DIVER a million and a half years ago...
(Yes, you read that right.)
...rumor has it there was a compilable map with working (examples of) lap counters / checkpoints.

Yeah, runs fine as a RAC file with no checkpoints.
If you have any I76 files of race maps, I could use them for reference.

OK, make sure when you're placing checkpoint that you have a minimum of two.
The trick is making sure they're called: check1, check2, etc...
If you CAPITALIZE them, the map will crash.
Good luck.

That was totally it. They work great now.
How incredibly goofy. I have REGEN and SPAWN in allcaps. The map editor guide even says CHECK1.
Oh well, thanks for clarifying that. I also discovered that they have a VERY wide detection area, thankfully. So far, no problems with missing laps on the map.
Guess it's about time I release it. How should I post it for you guys? Just throw a zip on dropbox?

How you distribute your map is up to you.
However, I'd suggest putting it in a *REASONABLY* formatted ZIP file and sending it over to a friend or two to test *BEFORE* general release.
That way, you can get input on the delivery as well as the map itself before "everyone" has it and you need to update it (or repair something or change the way the ZIP is assembled)...
$0.02

Of course. I'm pretty OCD about ease of installation and preserving directory structure. Hell, the map is a great example of how anal I am, lol. It's painfully small and simple, but I tweak and test the hell out of it. The damn jump alone, I made it so you can clear it in a heavier car with a mediocre engine, but if you have a really really fast and light car, you don't totally overshoot the landing. But at the same time, it isn't stupidly easy to clear.
